A Resurrection Sunday

A Witness to the Resurrection - Behold, all things are made new!

From the chapter “Telos: Practicing Paradise” in The Blue Sapphire of the Mind

“Grace . . . is nothing more or less than the means by which one wakes up to oneself,to God and to the world.  As such, it is critical to any understanding of what it might mean to live in the world as if it were paradise.”

“But the very hope of such a transfiguration can inspire a deeper level of attention to and care for the world we now inhabit.  This, I believe, is a crucial part of what it means to ‘practice’ paradise: to learn to see and cherish the world, even in its degraded condition as a whole.”

“The blue sapphire of the mind is a pure, luminous space unencumbered by anxiety and fear, pulsing with love.  A kind of paradise.”

“One of the most remarkable aspects of early monastic teaching on heaven is its careful attention to the entire range of habits and dispositions through which anxiety came to dominate the soul and through which freedom from anxiety could be attained.  Learning to live free from care meant rooting out not only the sources of anxiety that arose over basic concerns with food, clothing, and other bodily needs, but also those that manifested themselves in the continuing presence in the monk’s soul of pride, resentment, and anger.  Inhabiting the kingdom of heaven meant learning to live instead in a deepening condition of trust, humility, and love.” Jesus said, “Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid; believe in God, believe also in me.”  Might we hear these words as our command.
